There’s so much in here that’s absolutely my brand: appressed women carving out their inch of liberation! Witchy solidarity! A messy maternal relationship! The dark side of religion! Men are trash what else is new! I love how Blakemore took a figure from history and imbued her with a rich inner world I always appreciate when women are allowed to be their complex, crass, brilliant selves. I’m kind of baffled that I didn’t like this book more. THE MANNINGTREE WITCHES is a grisly, insightful historical fiction novel based on the real-life witch hunts that heightened during the English Civil War of the 1640s. “Witch is just their nasty word for anyone who makes things happen, who moves the story along.”

“ Romanov will cast a spell on readers and immerse them in a history anyone would long to be a part of.” (Sasha Alsberg) If you love magic and Imperial Russia, you want Romanov on your shelf!” (Evelyn Skye) “I am obsessed with this book! A magical twist on history that will have Anastasia fans wishing for more. That is, until she’s on one side of a firing squad.and he’s on the other. Nastya has only dabbled in magic, but it doesn’t frighten her half as much as her growing attraction to Zash. Nastya’s only chances of saving herself and her family are either to release the spell and deal with the consequences, or to enlist help from Zash, the handsome soldier who doesn’t act like the average Bolshevik. They don’t know the half of it.Īnastasia “Nastya” Romanov was given a single mission: to smuggle an ancient spell into her suitcase on her way to exile in Siberia. The plot is well paced and ramps up and slows down when needed. I feel the characters are quite interesting, with their own raison d'etres - their true selves coming out occasionally. It is a book I wish could be made into a film, because it has that quality. This is the best dystopian novel I have read recently. Oscar has to do his best to protect this girl he loves. Until he then meets a newcomer who changes his entire view of the world. However, Oscar is very aware of the Messages, and only nominally follows them. It's so perfect, because the Mayor - the narrator's father - has brainwashed all who live in the town. A utopia where everyone is good and healthy. Instead of the whole nation, or even a big city, Candor is a beautiful small town in rural Florida, where everything is beautiful and perfect. Candor is a dystopian novel, although not in the conventional sense.
